Psychologist Asks: Is Pole Dancing Really Empowering to Women?
Goal Auzeen Saedi, a Psychologist, recently wrote an article for Psychology Today about pole dancing and the empowerment of women. In this article she insinuates that Miley Cyrus is responsible for the pole dancing and twerking “crazes” and asks, “Further, why is gyrating and twirling around a pole supposed to engender sudden feelings of empowerment and sexiness? How come doing charitable work and a new haircut can’t provide the same?” Saedi’s main point? That pole dancing must not be empowering to women because pole dancing came from stripping and stripping was created for a man’s pleasure. Who said the ladies don’t like strip clubs too? We know plenty of women who enjoy going to strip clubs, our CEO/Founder, Annemarie Davies included! Saedi also mentions, “if the stigma of pole dancing is really being removed, then why isn’t it in our children’s P.E. classes alongside flag football and tennis?” Well, those educated on the subject know the answer to this, and we are continuing to change people’s minds about what pole dancing CAN mean, not remove it from where it began.
