October challenge — rediscover your happy!
Why did you first start pole dancing? Did you see a video of Felix or Jenyne or Bobbi or Oona or Karol or Alethea and think oh my gosh, I *need* to try that! Or maybe a friend was taking classes and loving every minute of it? Or maybe you started pole some for other reason entirely. No matter what your situation is, this challenge goes out to you!
It seems that lately, I have been reading a lot of Facebook posts, blog entries, or forum threads about frustration. Frustration over not being able to do a certain trick, frustration at not being confident with choreography, frustration over not being bendy enough.
So here’s what I would like you to do: take a minute and think about what first got you interested in pole. Think about the first time you did a spin! Did it give you that same heart in the mouth feeling that you got the first time you watched a marching band go thump thump thumping by, or the first time you fell in love, or the first time you twirled around until you were dizzy and collapsed into giggles?
Now — think back to the *last* time you felt that way. Think about how fun it is to dance when you don’t let frustration consume you. And allow yourself to feel that way during your next training or practice session. Instead of trying that nemesis trick, do all of your old favorite tricks and spins. The ones that make you feel like you can fly. The ones that leave you a little breathless. Put the new moves — and their accompanying frustration! — on the shelf for just one day and rediscover the silly, giddy joy that you felt the first time you ever touched a pole.
|For me, that giddy feeling always ends up looking something like this.
I cannot WAIT to hop on that pole! 😀
