MiNadia – The Incredible USA Pole Doubles Act

It’s very difficult to put into words how awesome Mina Mortezaie and Nadia Shariff are. Well, not so much difficult as it is simply not enough. Words are words, but the energy they give off, that is what is hard to explain. Separately, they are both amazing people. They are smart, funny, responsible, loving, sweet, adventurous, the list could go on. But when they’re together and their forces are joined, they are unstoppable, they are phenomenal. I guess you could say I’m a little biased. Not only are they imaginative, creative and dedicated when it comes to pole dancing, they are the most fun people to be around. Perhaps it comes from their genuine love of life in general and I am lucky to call them my dear friends.
Mina and Nadia (MiNadia) are traveling to Singapore this November to compete as doubles in the International Pole Championships (IPC). This is a huge deal for them! Not only is the trip long and the place of competition far away, the road leading up to it has been challenging as well. As their friend, I get to talk to them, spend time with them, and have an understanding of what it’s like for them. Both of these ladies are extremely busy and still manage to find time to get together and not just practice, but create and invent new things to keep their audience engaged and excited.
Just recently, Mina and her long time boyfriend bought a house and got a puppy. Mina works full time for Red Bull, teaching classes at Evolve Dance Studio regularly, finds time to work out, to study for school and to train with Nadia. Also just recently, Nadia obtained a position working for X-Pole, the leaders in pole and aerial equipment. She is also co-organizing California Pole Dance Championships, teaches at BeSpun and Luscious Maven, studios in Los Angeles. She takes care of her family’s home, two cats and does all of this with a 30 – 45 minute commute in and out of Los Angeles to train with Mina. For these two, there is never a moment to rest. Often, when I talk to them, we mention the 5 million things we all have to do and commiserate that we just want one night to do nothing, to do what we want to do. But the real truth is, pole is what we want to do, which is why we keep doing it, no matter what.

There are practice videos I have seen of what they are preparing to debut in Singapore. It’s exciting what they’ve got coming! Sometimes I’ve watched practices and love seeing them struggle trying something new and then finally getting it. There have been many nights when we go out for dinner, drinks and hang out with friends as a group. When we end up at someone’s house, with out fail, they are hand balancing on each others bodies in the middle of the living room. There is a lot of falling on top of each other, laughing and calling each other playful names, ones I won’t list here. Even when we are just hanging out, these two are working with each other, trying to do something new, not just to be better, but because it’s just that much fun for them.
For the 2011 USPDF in New York, they both competed, Mina in the Pro Division and Nadia in the Amateur Division. I roomed with them and watched them prepare for their competition. Even though they competed separately, it was like they were doing it together. In Singapore, I am lucky enough to be rooming with them again. It is going to be interesting watching them mentally prepare for their big night, and this time, they will be 100% together.
The thing about these two is this, there is magic between them. They are extremely talented performers and they love to share their art with others, whether it’s on stage or while teaching workshops. Their moves have caught on and inspired other doubles pole dancers all over the world. Doubles is very important to pole dancing in general. It is just one more aspect of pole to add to the reasons of why pole dancing is utterly amazing. Watching two people rely on each others weight, balance and grip on a tall, skinny and sometimes slippery apparatus can be breathtaking. These two do it with what seems like ease. Doubles helps legitimize what we are all doing by showing people another dimension of pole dancing, and MiNadia are some of the pioneers of doubles. I want to thank them, for changing the game, for their complete love of pole dancing and for always making me feel happy when in their presence.
