***UPDATE*** Cirque Du Soleil spokesperson, Renne-Claude Menard says “At this point in time, I can’t confirm exactly what happened. But I can confirm that she did not slip out of her harness,” Cirque Du Soleil is now working with the Occupational Health and Safety Administration to determine what the exact cause was in Sarah’s fall and to prevent further accidents. The show may start running again as early as July 9. Sarah was the mother of two children, 5 and 8, and was a trained acrobatic performer for 22 years in Paris. She is the first Cirque performer to die during a show, but not the first person to die from an accident while working for Cirque; in 2009 an acrobat died during a trampoline accident during rehearsals. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ (July 1, 2013) A tragic story has hit the aerial and acrobatic community of Sarah (Sassoon) Guyard’s death after she fell 50 feet on stage during a Cirque Du Soleil show. Sarah was one of the artists that performed in KÀ in Las Vegas. While climbing to the top of the vertical stage, she slipped free from her rigging and fell into an unseen pit. She was declared dead at the University Medical Center. Below is the official statement from Cirque Du Soleil: “The entire Cirque du Soleil family is deeply saddened by the accidental death of Sarah (Sassoon) Guyard, artist on the production KÀ, that happened on Saturday, June 29th, in Las Vegas. The artist’s immediate family has been informed of the accident. Our thoughts are with her family and the entire Cirque du Soleil family. “I am heartbroken. I wish to extend my sincerest sympathies to the family. We are all completely devastated with this news. Sassoon was an artist with the original cast of KÀ since 2006 and has been an integral part of our Cirque du Soleil tight family. We are reminded, with great humility and respect, how extraordinary our artists are each and every night. Our focus now is to support each other as a family. “ said Cirque du Soleil Founder, Guy Laliberté. We have been working with the appropriate authorities and have offered our full cooperation. Performances of KÀ will be cancelled until further notice. Cirque du Soleil kindly asks the media representatives to respect our time of mourning as a Company.”
