As simple as trying a new dish or getting bangs, ha-ha trying something new is NEVER simple. As we get older the road gets narrower, as humans we tend to get stuck in routines, routines in our actions, our tastes, our styles, so much really. Is it fear of failure? Fear of looking foolish? Or just some ingrained inability to jump off the tracks, like a train, stuck moving in the same direction every day, all day? Yes, trying something new can be a risk and risk taking is inherently failure prone and scary, otherwise it would be called sure-thing-taking. New things challenge and stimulate us, cultivating courage and personal growth. As humans our brains require challenges in order to remain stimulated. It’s a medical fact that the older we get, the more our brains need to be active. So instead of slowing down as we get older, we should be trying new things, learning new things, challenging our long held beliefs about the world and about ourselves. Challenges give you opportunities to discover new skills and learn about yourself. It is an opportunity to renew your energies, get excited, and curious. New things and challenges can help prevent boredom as you have allowed more opportunities to come into your life. Most importantly, is the opportunity for personal growth. As you develop your skills, it may take you to new places and perhaps push you to face your fears. You will learn to not be afraid of change and how to face a challenge. Love of challenges and learning is identified by Seligman as one of the 24 character strengths. Nurture this strength! Using this strength is also an opportunity to work on and develop other character strengths. Make this week the week you try something new, something different, something scary!
