Belgium is soon to host an event that promises to take pole right out of the box. Starting on 22 November, Sarah Cavenaile, the Quadruple Belgium Pole Dance Champion, will be presenting the 2014 Pole Fusion Festival. She promises an event that effectively combines all the various elements of performance art, theatre and creativity that are required in  our dance discipline. The event takes place across three days (Saturday 22 Nov, Sunday 23 Nov and Monday 24 Nov) in Watermael-Boitsfort, Belgium. It will consist of an eclectic mix of workshops and shows, as well as the first international pole competition organised in Belgium. Sarah owns and manages what was proudly the first ever pole studio in Brussels, called Sarahcademy, and as an instructor, Sarah has always passionately encouraged her students to develop their skills in different dance disciplines, so that they could create a unique fusion of pole and dance performance pieces. “This fusion is in fact a concept to which I am personally attached, as I have been practising theatre, a lot of different dance styles and some circus disciplines for about twenty years. Ultimately, I discovered that all of these disciplines were interconnected with the same goal: to help me to become the most complete artist possible and to rediscover every time this never ending happiness on stage, when you can find this ultimate connection between myself and the universe,” Sarah explains. “Sharing this experience with others is one of the most precious treasures in life. I see pole dance as a real performing art, a way to express a personal vision. I believe it is not a one dimensional gymnastics discipline, and communicate this concept to the audience in my own performances, in the shows I am directing, and in my pole classes. Now with this festival, I would like to expand this vision in Belgium, where pole dancing is quite new, and hopefully also to other international guests who attend.”

Some highlights of the event include:

  • BE Pole Connection – a show that includes solo and group performances presented by different pole schools in Belgium. Its goal is to unify the Belgian pole community and offer its dancers a common stage where they can meet, share their passion and express themselves around the concept of “Fusion”.
  •  Searching for Love – After the big success of its first edition in June 2014, the Sarahcademy team is again presenting its collective creation on the theme ‘the search for love’. Thirty dancers will be on stage to give you their vertical interpretation of this eternal search in solo, duo and group choreographies. All the performances are integrated into one unprecedented show, under the artistic direction of Sarah Cavenaile. Humour, tenderness, romanticism, wild instinct and unleashed passion will be on the program, to offer you an unforgettable and emotional evening.
  •  Zapping the Box – This is a 50 minute creation that combines theatre, pole dance, contemporary dance and duo acrobatics, performed and created by the duo Le Fil mauve, composed of Veronica Cruz and Sarah Cavenaile. Imagine that you are sitting in front of your TV screen, zapping involuntarily from one channel to another. Bizarrely, you see scenes that remind you of programs that have been broadcast all over the world. You zap through concepts and emotions with two poles as the sole setting.

As can be expected, the Pole Fusion competition strongly encourages a mix of different styles of dance or performing arts, and is open to individual artists, doubles, or groups of any skill level, gender, age and nationality.
