The Problem with Celebrity Pole Dancers

Comments Off on The Problem with Celebrity Pole Dancers

Quite frequently, we hear of another celebrity who comes across pole dancing (usually for a role in a film) and the pole community gets excited because they have an incredibly large reach. You’ve probably heard the saying, “bad press is still good press”, meaning as long as something is mentioned in the press, whether in a positive or negative light it is a good thing. It’s time to move away from that saying and train of thought. Bad press for pole dancing, is not good press. When a celebrity, like Carol McGiffin, an English Radio Broadcaster and Big Brother UK contestant, talks about how she pole danced to seduce old men in strip clubs, that’s not good press for the pole community. McGiffin recently told Daily Star, “I had my 40th birthday party where we all went to Stringfellows and I ended up pole-dancing in the pub with Peter Stringfellow….I just wanted to find out what the attraction was since so many people were at it….There were pictures and everything, it was a nuts thing to do.” The Pole Community and industry tries so hard to wipe away the grimy image that pole dancing has and while most of us are accepting of the sexy and sometimes raunchy side of pole dance, when are we going to say, enough is enough? Do we want stories like Carol McGiffin’s overshadowing us? Or do we want the world to know that pole dancing is so much more than a metal apparatus used to please someone sexually? Well, we can’t speak for everyone, but we can say that we’d rather hear about amazing people doing amazing things with pole, like creating new ways to make art, or a 10 year old Russian prodigy, or a meaningful performance that shows real emotions. So how do we make a change? How do we get attention from the right people? How do we spread the word about pole in a meaningful way? It can start with a great blog article, a beautiful photo or a video that blows people away, but it will only really start, when everyone is ready to share. Are you ready?
